International Women's Day 2022
On Tuesday 8 March, staff from UOW Global Enterprises and UOW College Australia came together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD is an important day in the UOWGE calendar as it’s a time to celebrate gender equality and help “break the bias” which was this year’s theme.
Our UOW College People and Culture Manager, Carlie Sulter opened the function with an Acknowledgment of Country, and to ensure that we celebrate and advocate for equality for minority groups on International Women’s Day. Carlie shared the inspirational story of Gomeroi woman, Mary Jane Cain with our staff. If you are not familiar with Mary Jane Cain’s story, it is well worth reading about – what an inspirational leader Mary Jane Cain would have been.
Group CEO, Marisa Mastroianni spoke of the importance of changing our gender bias mindset. She shared the riddle below which got everyone thinking about how and why they came to their answer.
“A father and son are involved in a car crash. Dad dies, son is whisked off to hospital. Son is being prepped for surgery when in walks the surgeon, takes one look and says "I can't operate on him, he's my son" The question is who is the surgeon.” - “It challenged me to think – are we really aware of our own bias?” #BreakTheBias.
