UOW Malaysia's staff and students recently participated in the celebrations of Malaysia’s 66th Independence Day on 31 August 2023 and Malaysia Day on 16 September 2023, marking significant moments in the nation's history.
The School of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) sent a team of chefs to join the Chefs of Malaysia contingent in the National Day parade in Putrajaya, performing under the observant eyes of the King and Queen, the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, and the public.
This year, the federal government's theme for the National Day celebration was ‘Malaysia Madani: Determination in Unity, Fulfilling Hope’. Chosen to strengthen the spirit of unity, the theme underscores the shared aspirations of all communities in building a stronger Malaysia.
Adding to the festivities, UOWM's Petronas scholars spontaneously took part in the ‘Keretapi Sarong’ (Sarong Train) flash mob performance. The Keretapi Sarong, which united individuals from diverse backgrounds in their traditional sarongs at a concealed venue, was akin to a flash mob but with active public involvement.
The sarong, a traditional attire worn by men and women across different ethnic communities in Malaysia, served as a symbol of unity. This extraordinary event aimed to foster unity among Malaysians from all backgrounds, promote the use of public transport, and uphold the sarong as an emblem of unity. The atmosphere was festive, marked by singing, dancing, and a multitude of people adorned in intricate headdresses, showcasing the vibrant cultural diversity of Malaysia.
